History

Mammoth Running Camp began in 2017 when Harlan Lopez brought three of his club athletes and their parents to Mammoth, CA for a three day training experience and an opportunity to share one of his favorites places on earth. Coach Lopez, the three athletes and their parents shared one condo and agreed that this had to become a summer camp tradition.

In the summer of 2018, more club athletes wanted to join and it grew to 8 athletes.

The 2019 camp introduced non club athletes and had 20 divided into two condos with volunteer parent counselors for two weeks.

In 2020 we were hit with a dilemma about having camp during a global pandemic. Parents and athletes insisted camp go on and were willing to cooperate with safety protocols put in place including proof of a negative Covid-19 test prior to coming and twice daily temperature checks. 2020 was the first year we introduced zoom calls with Professional and Olympic athletes as well as hired college runners as camp counselors giving them not only a summer training opportunity, but a chance to help mentor our athletes.

By 2021 camp had extended to three weeks of high school athletes and one week of youth with each week capped at 20 athletes per week. It was also the first year we had athletes from Sacramento and Southern California!

The 2022 camp saw more growth and a record breaking number 50 athletes come to camp!

2023 saw record numbers overall with over 80 campers coming in the three weeks

The three sessions of the 2024 camp is open to all 8-12 graders with the number of athletes capped at 35 per session.
